Merida is in the southeastern part of Mexico, in the Yucatan peninsula, and not far from some of the most popular Mexico travel destinations, including Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen.
The Yucatan peninsula in Mexico has three states: Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo. Merida is the capital of Yucatan State. A peninsula is a piece of land almost entirely surrounded by water but is connected to the mainland on one side, so in the case of Yucatan, the peninsula is surrounded to the north and west by the Gulf of Mexico. At the same time, the Caribbean stretches the length of the east coast.
The closest beach to Merida is Puerto Progreso, a cruise port city. Progreso is located about 23 miles (36 km), or 45 minutes by car, from Plaza Grande (City Center) and 30 minutes from North Merida.
The best time to visit Merida is from November to March, while avoiding May through September might be a good idea.
Merida’s rainy season runs from May to October, and the dry season from November to April. The good news about the rainy season is that storms usually pass quickly. However, it rains every day during summer, mainly in the afternoon for a couple of hours; the rest of the day is mostly sunny.
Lastly, keep in mind that Hurricane season runs from June to the end of November 30th; therefore, Merida is susceptible to intense thunderstorms, tropical storms, and even hurricanes, although the last is not common.
TIP: May it’s usually the most humid and hottest month of the year, and mosquitos are bad during this time.
